Positive Opportunities

  1. China is the #4 importer of US products.
  2. U.S. is the #1 supplier of agricultural products to China.
  3. US exports to China are growing 10 times as fast as US exports elsewhere.
  4. Rising demand for fresh market produce.
  5. Rapidly rising middle/upper class in China resulting in increasing demand for high quality products
  6. Rising demand and exports of high quality fresh California products;
  7. U.S. is the largest importer of Citrus, Cherries, Stone fruits, grapes and apples in China.
  8. Many US commodity groups have programs in China.
  9. According to USDA, China is becoming emerging power in organic food production.

Threats
  1. Chinese competition for Fresh garlic industry.
  2. Chinese competition for Fresh broccoli exports to Japan.
  3. Chinese competition for Apple juice concentrate.
  4. Chinese competition for Frozen strawberry.
  5. Recent food safety concerns.

Marketing / Sales Considerations

  • Huge population 1.3 billion (4.5 times US pop)
  • Approximately same land mass as US
  • Arable land about the same as US, however declining due to urbanization
  • Concentration of huge wealthy markets; Shanghai & Beijing combined population approximates California population.
  • High-end international superstores with much imported goods
  • Can China feed it’s self in the future?  Can same land mass, same arable land support the huge, upward mobile population demanding increasing amounts of goods?
